Hannah K.Lee’s illustration. Shoes Over Bills, use simple illustrations to compare the price of all different pairs of shoes to daily life bills. It is a fun and alternative way to let us realize the high expense women spend for shoes. The bill is illustrated with hand drawn typography, which creates a relaxing atmosphere when addressing a topic that can be serious and boring.

This is a good short film about the language of information design. Gestalten.tv met with Francesco Franchi, this art director for IL-Intelligence in Lifestyle, the monthly magazine of Il Sole 24 ORE, last summer in Berlin to talk about his inspirations, influences and editorial design.
I am inspired by his concept: “If there is no content, there is no design.” and “Passion is the most important thing.”
Francesco Franchi is the art director for IL-Intelligence in Lifestyle, the monthly magazine of Il Sole 24 ORE, Italy’s leading financial daily. “Embracing new languages in journalism,” Franchi is a true master of combining representation and interpretation, creating a visual form that is as graphic as it is narrative, as entertaining as it is informative. His work has been awarded on numerous occasions, including the European Design Awards and at the renowned Malofiej conference. Gestalten.tv met with him last summer in Berlin to talk about his influences, innovative storytelling and non-linear reading in today’s editorial design. Sara Illenberger use clear composition photography and text in a information design for a sex survey by German magazine NEON. (Please click on her name for link of website for her works)
“In her illustrations, Sarah Illenberger gets up close and personal with intimate facts and graphic details.” (1)
Her design “build a bridge between abstract data and familiar symbols, objects, spaces, or experiences.” and this relationship is linked “which rely on the viewer’s interpretation in order to enhance and intensify the meaning. (R. 2010, p.128)

Paula Scher is one of my favorite designers who is very well known for her boldly, innovative typographic design. Her works and ideas about graphic designs always inspire me.
She gave a talk about her four different projects at 99U Conference:
1. The railway identity
2. The MoMA’s identity
3. Reinvigorating a Pittsburgh neighborhood
4. Applying her typographic illustration on the walls of a school.
and how she throws herself into unknown territory to make great works.
I am inspired by her talk as she said : “Do what you never done before,” as letting yourself do things new and different can lead a surprising and great outcome.
Also, in the video, I agree with what she said about the difference between art and design as “Design has a purpose, art doesn’t.” However, I am greatly inspired by the way she uses her art works of Map as the design for school walls.

I went to hear a talk from a current graphic designer Shaz Madani, (click the link for her portfolio) who runs her own studio in London now. She is invited to talk about her journey of turning into a successful designer to Graphic Design students. She opened the talk with her belief in Bob Gill’s saying in above that “that solutions ought to derive from the subject matter; the designer should therefore have no preconceived graphic style…” It is the believe from the London advertising agency and formed by the three great designers, Alan Fletcher Colin Forbes Bob Gill, named Fletcher / Forbes / Gill (a forerunner of Pentagram).
I am inspired by this saying that we should look into the subject itself and give the solution to it, not trying to tag a meaning or design on it.
As Bob Gill said An interview between Bob Gill and Patrick Baglee on Eye Magzine, Autumn 1999: “I’m interested in reality. I’m interested in looking at things and saying things about them the way they are. Each one of my jobs is about things people could have seen themselves had they bothered to look.”
The leads me to think again the importance of looking at the subjects they are and do not hold any preconceived thinking about the subject.

I am fascinated by Paul Sahre’s works as I was doing researched on my “Looking for Taiwan” MA project. Most of his works are in poster format and they are composed with all different kinds of methods as he plays images as symbols to let them to tell the messages themselves. There are not a lot of text on his poster as the image itself can speak for itself already. His works are used for book covers and also contributes to the New York Times. A lot of his works concern with globe issues like the war in Iraq, things happen in Bagdad, and ext. as these works are contributed to the New York Times or the Washington Post.
I am enlighten by how he use symbols to give a strong message directly. His methods in works ranged from photography, illustrations, typography and collages. Most of his works use one~two objects to directly give a powerful impact on the issue he is addressing.
He started his great interest in poster design from his postgraduate study. In this poster, he used a gun godness to be worshiped by a group of impotent me and on the right, there are pictures to present phallic symbols.

This is a design consultancy base in London. They are introduced to me when I was flipping through a design magazine. The studio is established in 1990 and they have done a variety of projects such as exhibition, catalogs, create identity for their clients. Their design solution combines with new and old forgotten technologies which lead to a new creative solution for designs.
I am particularly fascinated by a campaign project they have done for a Denmark design textile company, Kvadrat’s best selling textile design called, Hallingdal. The project is to reinterpret this design in more contemporary design. The studio capture this specific textile pattern’s unique vivid color and the weaving structure to for a design of catalog cover in screen printing method. The idea of taking the textile pattern to transform to a new identity of the textile design itself create a new invention but also owns the textile’s atmosphere. The choices of vivid color palettes also make the design fun, interesting and also presents a contemporary color style.

I came across to an illustrator’s prints exhibition at our school’s study room while I was doing my research. His name is Otto and his main drive of design making is from screen printing. His use of bold bright colors and simple forms immediately attract my eyes. His composition is simple and there are only use of 2 or 3 colors in most of them. However, this way can directly bring out the main focus of the composition and also balance the whole image. He use fun ways to create illustrations as he combine vector flat images with photos to convey a story. The old historical or renaissance painting characters are situated in a different context to let us to see a different but interesting story in one image.
